A Domain of Your Own?
A client of mine recently found out that they do not actually own their domain name. When their “website developer” originally set up their site he did a “favour” and registered the domain for them.
What this “favour” had done was make it a nightmare for my client and I to get the domain transferred into the name of the organization. For nearly two weeks we have been struggling to get this site’s domain set up correctly and finally through the strange workings of parent registrars the domain is now in the hands of the rightful owner.
The lesson here is: Make sure you are going to be the registrant and/or the administrative contact on your domain before you have your website developer register your domain. To be absolutely sure that you will have control and ownership rights over your domain you should register it yourself at one of the many reputable registrars out there.
Personally I have had great experience with 10Dollar.ca who is a reseller of eNom.com domains and is also an certified .ca registrar.
